Description

Why Should You Consider A Hair Mineral Analysis?

  • Are you concerned about your horse's health & nutritional status?
  • Is your horse's health compromised?
  • Have you tried multiple supplement programs with little or no improvements?
  • Do you want to take the guesswork out of your nutritional program?

If you answered "yes" to any of the above questions, then it is time to consider doing a hair mineral analysis.

I. Tissue mineral analysis is a test that measures the mineral content of the hair. Mineral content of the hair accurately reflects the mineral content of the body's tissue. If a mineral deficiency or excess exists in the hair profile it usually indicates a mineral deficiency or excess within the body.

II. Minerals are essential in numerous functions for all phases of metabolism.

III. Hair is used as one of the tissues of choice by the Environmental Protection Agency in determining toxic metal exposure. In 1980, a report from the EPA stated that hair can be effectively used for biological monitoring of the highest priority toxic metals. This report confirmed the findings of other studies in the U.S. and abroad, which concluded that hair may be a more appropriate tissue than blood or urine for studying exposures to some trace minerals.

IV. What causes mineral imbalances or deficiencies? Various mineral imbalances, as revealed by hair analysis can indicate metabolic dysfunctions before any symptoms occur. (Stress, Medications, Pollution, Food, or Supplements).

V. Hair analysis is an invaluable screening tool to determine the correct program of diet and supplementation for each individual's specific needs. Never before has there been available such an accurate, scientifically valid guide to metabolic function and balance.

What can be learned by a HMA?

  1. Enzyme function
  2. Endocrine function
  3. Toxic metals
  4. Inflammatory tendencies
  5. Stress response and recovery
  6. Nutritional deficiencies, excesses, and imbalances

"A Guide to Biochemical Individuality", by John Grogan, Certified Nutritionist

Hair analysis is accepted by the Environmental Protection Agency in determining the levels of toxic metals in the body. The amount of toxic metals vary from person to person greatly.

Exposure, excretion rate and metabolic balance are some of the factors affecting toxic status. The toxic metals, most notably lead, mercury, cadmium, and aluminum - also appreciably interfere in normal metabolism, and their presence can mimic some disease symptoms.

The levels of minerals in the hair can correlate well with the mineral level in the body's organs. The levels of calcium, magnesium, zinc, copper, manganese and chromium correlate especially well, as do the toxic metals.

Sodium, potassium and phosphorus can also correlate well (depending on the laboratory doing the test). The major exception is iron. It does not seem to correlate well with the body's levels of iron.

If mineral values (levels) are low, they can give one a good idea of possible deficiencies. Too low an intake, malabsorption syndromes, and other metabolic imbalances can contribute to low tissue mineral levels.

High mineral values can indicate excessive consumption or storage of one or more minerals, or other imbalances.

From this, an idea of specific metabolic (functions) efficiency comes forth. The trends for blood sugar control, adrenal function, thyroid function, energy production and the rate of metabolism, are but a few of these metabolic functions.

In combination with other appropriate testing, in a holistic setting, hair analysis can be a valuable asset in anyone's health program.
